Auto manufacturer Ford Motor Company is recalling upwards of 400,000 cars over concerns that doors can fly open while the vehicle is in motion, presenting a risk of injury.
According to Ford, the company will be recalling 389,585 of its vehicles due to a door defect. Reportedly, defective pawl spring tabs are preventing doors from latching all the way, so they can swing open suddenly while the vehicle is in motion or stopped. The effected models include:
- Ford Fiesta
- Ford Fusion
- Lincoln MKZ Sedans
Ford issued the recall after receiving more than 200 reports from consumers complaining that the door latch is defective. After investigating the complaints, Ford discovered that the defective vehicles were all manufactured at one of its plants in Mexico.
There have been at least two injuries associated with the door latch defect. In these instances, the doors flew open unexpectedly and bounced back on people. In a non-injury complaint, a consumer reported the door flying open and hitting a nearby car.
Recently, we reported that auto manufacturers recalled nearly four times the amount of cars they sold last year, with Ford being one of the top offenders. Also in recent recall news, last month, Ford recalled of 220,000 of its vehicles over various defects, including problems with door handles, vacuum pumps, and sensors.
While auto manufacturers issue recalls of dangerous and defective vehicles, they often do not do so until after multiple consumers have complained. In some cases, auto manufacturers don’t recall these dangerous vehicles until after multiple people have been injured and even killed.
