Early this morning a tragic hit-and-run accident occurred on Culebra Road, right outside Loop 1604. The vehicle driver struck a bicyclist traveling in the bike lane around 7:45 a.m. The rider, who was in his 50s, was killed.
According to the SAPD, the driver fled the scene. A motorist reportedly tried to follow after the hit-and-run driver to ensure they were apprehended, but could not keep up with them. Fortunately, the driver was arrested shortly after in the Lake Hills area. The Bandera County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this report.
As of now, the situation is still developing and details are still being discovered. Authorities are trying to determine whether the cyclist swerved into traffic or if the car collided into the bike lane.
SAN ANTONIO HAILED AS BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY
Texas has continued to make great strides in creating bicycle friendly communities throughout the state. San Antonio was ranked as a bicycle friendly communities by the League of American Bicyclists, along with Austin, Houston, The Woodlands, and several other cities. However, just because a city has been deemed “friendly for bicyclists” does not mean that the threat of accidents is eliminated.
As seen in the tragic case mentioned above, a simple swerve into the wrong lane-whether on part of the driver or rider-can easily lead to a devastating accident. Both drivers and bicyclists must always remain aware of their surroundings and exercise caution when in traffic.
When accidents do occur, it is imperative that authorities act fast to respond, ensuring proper safety measures are in place for bicyclists and that drivers are aware of riders’ rights. Unfortunately, when drivers flee the scene, it is criminal behavior that can put the victim’s family in more distress. In this case, the negligent driver was quickly apprehended and will face consequences for their actions.
