Drowsiness is a leading cause of collisions in America

Drowsiness is one of the leading causes of crashes in the United States. People may fall asleep behind the wheel or just be distracted by their fatigue, making them less safe overall.

Drowsy driving results in crashes most often between midnight and 6:00 a.m. or during the late afternoon. Both of these times make sense since the natural circadian rhythm makes people tired during those times. Crashes are also more likely to happen on rural roads and highways compared to other settings.

What should you do if you see a driver who looks drowsy?

If you see a driver who has been weaving in and out of the lanes, then that could be a sign that the driver is drowsy, distracted or dealing with other issues. If they begin to go off the road, the rumble strips might wake them enough for them to correct. If you see these behaviors, it’s a good idea to call 911. When you call, let the authorities know that the driver is acting unusually. If you have the license plate and your current location, then that information will help the police find the vehicle and pull it over.

It may be smart to put some distance between yourself and the vehicle, so you can reduce the risk of a crash. If they do hit you, they could be held liable for your injuries.
