Dozens injured and several killed in icy I-35 crash A winter storm unleashed a deadly mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow on the Dallas-Fort Worth area today, causing numerous car accidents. One of the car accidents involved at least 75 vehicles on Interstate 35. Cars and trucks collided on the icy road, resulting in ambulances taking 36 people to the hospital, several of whom were in critical condition. There are several people reported dead, according to an article from Associated Press. Photographs from the scene show vehicles tangled together and even piled on top of each other as many as three high, dramatic proof of how serious the multivehicle crash was.

Rescue Efforts For Highway Crash Victims

Before tow trucks, ambulances and other rescue vehicles could get to the scene, ice and sand needed to be put down on the highway to prevent further collisions. Even so, reports indicate that first responders were slipping and falling as they arrived on the scene. There was also one incident of an ambulance accident, though no injuries were suffered by rescue personnel. Thankfully, the ambulances involved carry ice and sand for just these purposes. Rescue teams worked diligently to remove drivers and passengers trapped in their cars. Clean-up will likely continue for some time. Police officers set up a reunification center at the Riverside Community Center at 3700 E. Belknap Street, to make it easier for friends and family members to find their loved ones who were involved in the major car accident. Roads remain slippery in Fort Worth, Dallas and throughout all of north Texas that was hit by the winter storm. We encourage people to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary to avoid further auto accidents and to keep the streets clear for rescue vehicles.
