Biggest Auto Recall In History: Takata Issues 34 Million Airbag Defect Recalls

Takata recently announced that it would be expanding its already large 18 million auto recall to 34 million recalls over defective airbags, making this the largest auto recall in history and one of the largest consumer product recalls ever.

Takata announced that it would be nearly doubling its air bag recall from 18 million to 34 million. Even though investigators have tied the faulty airbags to at least five deaths, Takata has been resistant to take vehicles using their airbags off the road. Takata made airbags have been known to explode, which can send shrapnel from the steering wheel flying into the driver and passenger’s face and body, leaving victims looking as though they had been shot. Injuries range from lacerations to loss of vision.

Takata Faulty Airbags: Affected Vehicles

Honda manufactured a majority of the vehicles involved in the injury and death reports, but other vehicles were affected as well. Most of these vehicles were manufactured between 2000 and 2011.

  • Honda
  • BMW
  • Chrysler
  • Daimler Trucks
  • Ford
  • General Motors
  • Mazda
  • Mitsubishi
  • Nissan
  • Subaru
  • Toyota

Not all vehicles manufactured by these companies between 2000 and 2011 are affected by the Takata airbag recall, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is still waiting to hear back from the auto manufacturers as to which specific models and years were manufactured with these faulty airbags. People can search for recalls by VIN number to see if their vehicle has been affected.

Why are the Takata airbags defective?

Takata recalled their airbags because of faulty inflators. According to the NHTSA, the propellant that the airbags were made from can wear down over time, which can lead to cracks and ruptures in the airbag structure.
