Another San Antonio Apartment Fire Highlights The Importance Of Smoke Detectors

Last Wednesday, a two-alarm fire burned down an apartment building on the North Side of San Antonio near the North Star Mall. The fire department arrived at the La Paloma Apartments around 12:30 in the afternoon. From what the fire department could tell based on initial observation, the fire started on the second story and then spread to the attic.

Firefighters attempted to fight the flame from inside the building, but it did not take long before collapsing debris forced them to move out. High winds that day only aggravated the situation.

The building where the fire started had eight occupied units. That entire building was lost. A second building in the complex was exposed to flames, but firefighters were able to protect it. A third building was evacuated, but not affected. Although there were no reported injuries or deaths, many residents lost everything in the fire.

Sadly, we see many of these types of fires around this time of year. One step that everyone can take to reduce their risk of fire is installing smoke detectors and checking them regularly. If your smoke detector has old or no batteries, it will not alert you in the event of a fire, so make sure to replace the batteries. In the event that your smoke detector malfunctions, you can replace it or notify your landlord.
